Deb's Journey...

2013 assisting in NYC for Solstice in Times Square
All I've ever wanted in life since I was a child was to sing and enjoy nature. I've been lucky enough to enjoy such a life. My childhood was horribly effected by the death of my Grandmother "Lee Lee". She was my mothers mother and the glue holding us all together. Her death marked the destruction of stability in our already "non-traditional" household. My father and mother were never married and my mother is a lesbian. Now sitting as this version of myself I understand this, but needless to say in the 70's, 80's and even 90's the LGBT community was not so well understood and still feared by the mainstream. In Bensonhurst we were a target for that fear. My family struggled with addiction, depression and a basic lack of support and structure to keep it all running smoothly. I fortunately had a lot of singing to do and a great ability to disassociate and disappear. I studied classical voice at Mark Twain Junior High School under the most amazing man Mr. Paul Postel. He had us singing Mozart's Grand Mass by the time we were 13. He taught gave me a haven for me to be myself and do what I love. He provided structure in a world where it was all a cracked mess.
